UNITY IN DIVERSITY
THEME RATIONALE
This year’s Annual Report theme – “Unity in Diversity” – pays tribute to our people. – we say it often and with good reason. It is only because of the determination and dedication of our people that we can serve our customers, generate long-term value for our shareholders, as well as contribute to the industry and broader community. This has been particularly true amidst the challenges of our industry these past few years. Based in different geographic locations around the world, our multi-faceted workforce of seafarers and shore employees bring onboard their unique skills and talents as well as their disparate perspectives, beliefs and cultural nuances that make MISC a colourful yet energetic place to work in. It is this diversity that accords us a vital strategic advantage and enables us to deliver dynamic results. While the differences between our people are marked, they are never foreign; instead the variety is harmonious and never discordant. At the crux of the Group’s efforts is a focus on cultivating and sustaining a diverse work environment and workforce which is critical to connecting with and meeting the unique needs of our diverse clientele and the many communities in which we operate. This year’s “Unity in Diversity” theme also underscores our efforts to cultivate more effective teamwork throughout our diverse workforce across the globe and to strengthen synergistic collaboration among our many businesses. We understand that great strength comes from unifying the hearts and minds of diverse groups of people. It is this collective might which gives people the boldness to stretch beyond their limits and boundaries and attempt new things in new and better ways. As we strive to fulfil our potential and achieve our aspirations, we will harness the unified strength of our people through fostering and cultivating solidarity, as well as by enabling collaboration and positive relationships across our different businesses, departments and geographic locations. The “Unity in Diversity” theme does not just stop at our internal efforts but also extends to our relationships with our partners and industry players. Strategic partnerships and collaborations are vital to our sustainability in the marketplace and enhance our efforts to build better businesses as well as generate value to our stakeholders. We believe that our efforts today will support a stronger and flourishing industry tomorrow as well as help build our brand reputation for the long-term. Today, with a solid foundation and clear perspective of who we are and where we need to get to, a unified, strengthened and focused MISC Group is ready to pursue growth opportunities. The future holds much promise for us.

tracked recording of the biggest show we’d ever done. We were pretty stoked after that one. The studio-recorded tracks on the EP never stray too far, arrangement-wise, from what you two could conceivably perform

PIERCE BROTHERS Pat Pierce of adored Aussie folk duo Pierce Brothers answers our questions about fresh new EP, My Tired Mind . For the full Q&A, visit stack.com.au. Do the two live tracks on the EP come from your recent Aussie headline tour? I can hear a throaty scream at the start of The Records Were Ours but I couldn’t decipher if you named a city! That show was once of the most amazing shows we’ve ever played; it was at Colours Of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Ostrava is a city on the east side of CZ, about 10 minutes away from the border of Poland. We weren’t expecting much from the set, as we’d never played a show that far east in Europe. Sure enough, we turned up to our 11pm set [and saw] 25,000 people screaming at us. [Afterwards] we found that we’d gotten a fully- GOOD BOY
yourselves on stage. Is it important to stay as close to that live energy as possible, or do you foresee something different in the future? It’s definitely something we’ve talked about and experimented with – having other musicians on-stage with us. Generally our strength is in us getting such a big sound on stage with just the two of us, so we’re tentative to commit to touring with, say, keys or bass or horns.
The official video for The RecordsWere Ours is very cute.Which one of you is that doing the worm, and have you ever accidentally squashed your face while doing it? That was a funny day actually. I had the idea to mash up some studio footage with a performance piece in a cool-looking ballroom, so we had a look around and found one quite
close to where we live! A good friend of ours Carl Allison went to film school with me and we’ve worked on several of our film clips in the past, so we teamed up again and just winged it on the day. The worm came from Carl directing [me] to just walk around and do stupid sh-t. And yes, I have f-cked my nose a couple of times doing that! ZKR
That said, the more time we spend in the studio, the more carried away we get, so we find ourselves adding keys and horns (etcetera) to the tracks. I guess we’ll just need to see what the future holds. At this stage we’re still adding instruments to our set-up, which is a nightmare to travel with, but is a lot of fun once it’s set up!

we picked up on the Sunshine Coast. I think we give cars names because of all one’s possesions, cars are usually one of the most expensive and useful, so we put a high emotional and financial value onto the car. And this is amplified if the car has a lot of character and/
bastard got treated like sh-t.
At the beginning of Fishing With A Shotgun someone says something like “You’re rolling! Pizza timer is on.” Did you promise yourselves ‘No pizza ‘til we get a good take’? We recorded FWAS with Tim Fitz from Middle Kids in his grandparents’ house built in the ‘50s. If I can remember correctly, it was in between shows on the Skeggs tour, and I was particularly hungover and didn’t want to be alive

Was there any specific point where you decided you wanted to really use your lyrics to criticise, decipher or commend what you saw going on in Australian politics? No, there was no point where I wanted to do that. I write very blatant lyrics; they are not hard to read and figure out. Australian politics and politicians is something that I get angry about and so I wrote about the Marriage Equality battle, for example – something many, many Australians feel strongly about, and it is relatable, and I’ve done my duty as someone who has a platform to speak out
against this or that. I guess that’s it: if you have been
or sentimental value. Albert and I had a very healthy dominant- submissive relationship. Poor
given a platform to speak out about issues you feel strongly about, it is your duty to do so.
1972VW Superbug is extremely beautiful. Did you name your beetle Albert? Why do you think we anthropomorphise cars? Thank you for saying so, you’re too kind. Yes, Albert was the name my father and I gave to the 1972 VW Superbug
anymore. I think we were doing the vocal takes and, yeah, pretty much the pizza was on its way, and I had to get a good take down before it arrived. It picked up my mood for sure. Tim is a really good engineer and is so fun to hang out and talk with. ZKR
