Speech Therapy Works Wonders Presen Ɵ ng Jasper “The Champ”

Seven ‐ year ‐ old, Jasper Smith loves sports, math, and bea Ɵ ng LaReeca James, his speech therapist, at Kerplunk. Jasper has been visi Ɵ ng Kids Center for a year and a half, receiving speech therapy for his severe Apraxia. Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech have problems saying sounds, syllables, and words due to di ffi culty moving the body parts — lips, jaw, tongue — needed for speech. Kids in general, much like Jasper, have far greater abili Ɵ es to understand speech than to express themselves with spoken words. When speaking to Jasper, one can see his ability. He even surprised his mom when he knew exactly how long he’d been coming to see LaReeca at Kids Center. Before he would use one word to communicate, making it easier for others to understand. Now, he knows the only way to get what he wants is through whole sentences. The progress he has made in combina Ɵ on of therapy at Kids Center and con Ɵ nued guidance at home, has lead him to be understood by most. Although communica Ɵ on is s Ɵ ll di ffi cult, he is making great strides. LaReeca remembers that, when Jasper fi rst came to Kids Center, “an unfamiliar listener could not understand anything… He has made wonderful progress, learning to slow down to help himself get the motor sequencing necessary for speech sound produc Ɵ on.” For, as LaReeca puts it, “he loves nothing be Ʃ er than to be the champ!”

Jasper is in his fi rst year of homeschooling, where he excels in math and surpasses the menial addi Ɵ on and subtrac Ɵ on level. Jasper, compe ƟƟ ve at heart, enjoys playing football and basketball. One of his favorite memories at Kids Center is when the Bellarmine basketball team came to play with the kids in the gym. With a great smile, Jasper is op Ɵ mis Ɵ c and resilient in tackling his Apraxia with the help of Kids Center therapies and LaReeca by his side. Jasper’s suppor Ɵ ve family has no doubt that he will con Ɵ nue to overcome his obstacles!
